Muscle strain & tightness relief in San Francisco

Soft tissue work to release it now, and a strength progression so the same spot doesn't tighten up again next month.

About this condition

Why the same muscle keeps tightening up

A muscle strain — a stretch or small tear in the muscle fibers — and chronic tightness are different injuries, but they usually respond to the same approach: calm the tissue down, then build its capacity back up.

Tightness that keeps coming back to the same spot is often the muscle protecting a weakness nearby, or compensating for another area that isn't pulling its weight. Releasing the tension gives short-term relief; building strength in and around that muscle is what keeps it from tightening back up.

How we treat it

Relieve, rehab, strengthen — applied to muscle strains

01

Assess

We find the strained or tight muscle and check what nearby joints or muscles might be compensating around it.

02

Relieve

Soft tissue work — including Active Release, cupping, and IASTM/Graston — to release the tension and support healing.

03

Rebuild

A progressive strength plan for that muscle and the ones around it, so the same spot stops taking on more than its share.

What relief actually looks like

"Dr. Mae Li is great! She provided very specific guidance for a hamstring issue, which improved it materially in the first month. Thanks!"

Muscle strains & tightness, answered

Should I stretch a tight muscle or strengthen it?

Usually both, in that order — stretching and soft tissue work reduce the immediate tension, then strengthening addresses why it kept getting tight in the first place.

How long does a muscle strain take to heal?

Mild strains often improve within a couple of weeks with proper care; more significant strains can take longer. Rushing back to full activity too soon is a common reason strains recur.

Why does the same muscle keep getting tight?

It's usually compensating for a weakness or restriction nearby — the tightness is a symptom of that imbalance, not a separate problem on its own.

Can I keep training with a muscle strain?

Often yes, in modified form — we'll tell you what to avoid and how to keep progressing safely while the tissue heals.
