Sports injury care for San Francisco's runners, lifters, and weekend athletes

Sidelined before a race, a season, or your next PR? We build the return-to-play plan around your sport — not a generic protocol.

About this condition

Overuse injuries build up before they show up

Whether it's a runner's knee, a strained hamstring, or tennis elbow, sports injuries are rarely random — they're usually the result of volume, load, or a movement pattern the body couldn't quite handle.

Generic advice — "rest it," "ice it," "see how it feels" — doesn't tell you why it happened or how to come back stronger. We build a plan around your specific sport: what training you're doing, what you're working toward, and what movement pattern actually needs to change so the injury doesn't just come back next season.

How we treat it

Relieve, rehab, strengthen — applied to your sport

01

Assess

A sport-specific movement assessment to find the mechanical cause behind the injury, not just the sore spot.

02

Relieve

Adjustments and soft tissue work to reduce pain and get you moving again as quickly as it's safe to.

03

Rebuild

Progressive, sport-specific strength training — milestone-based, not date-based, discharge — so you come back more durable than before.

From a patient

What relief actually looks like

"I am a former collegiate tennis player, I have had knee tendinitis for the past 6 years. After seeing five physical therapists, I was almost convinced there was no fix for my ailment. In a matter of four visits, Dr. Li discovered a simple solution to the problem, involving a slight modification to my movement pattern while playing. This was without time-intensive rehabilitation exercises. I am forever grateful to Dr. Li for keeping me on the court."

Can I keep training while being treated?

Often yes, in modified form. We'll tell you what to scale back, what to swap, and what's fine to keep doing — the goal is to keep you moving toward your sport, not sideline you completely unless it's truly necessary.

Do you build a return-to-play plan, or just tell me to rest?

A real return-to-play plan — relief first, then rehab to fix the movement pattern behind the injury, then progressive strength training so you come back more durable than before, not just "cleared."

Do you treat recreational and weekend athletes, or only serious competitors?

Both. We work with runners, lifters, CrossFit and Hyrox athletes, weekend warriors, and everyone in between — the plan is built around your sport and your goals, whatever level you're training at.

What if I don't have a clear diagnosis for my injury yet?

That's normal — a thorough assessment on your first visit is how we figure out what's actually going on. If something needs imaging or a specialist beyond what we can address, we'll refer you out.
